Delorean iPod Dock

March 27, 2010

Awhile back I wanted to install a more modern DIN-size radio to replace the original dual-shaft unit in my Delorean. Doing so required either cutting the bejeezes outta the original metal dash or replacing the whole assembly with a newly-designed upgrade from Delorean Motor Company. As it turned out a friend gave me a beat-up original metal dash plate that someone had tried to cut to DIN size, so I stored my original dash and radio and restored the freebie to like new.

The new Alpine head unit included an iPod control feature…so while I was at it, I mounted the iPod in place of the original ashtray. The iPod dock is a modified product available online from Airgizmos http://www.airgizmos.com/prod/pd3/index.asp

The dock’s original width is a perfect fit in the original ashtray opening, but its length is too long. I used a bandsaw to cut it shorter, re-radiused all the corners to match the ashtray corners, sanded
smooth and polished the edges, and Dremeled off four side mounts on the back side so it would clear the sides of the ashtray hole. Then made a bracket to hold it in tight from the bottom.

The Airgizmos dock was made to mount on a vertical surface (airplane dash) so I added a spring-loaded ejector platform cut from the top of a Radio Shack project box. Covered it in leather-grained vinyl cut from the front face of the original long-deteriorated lower seat covers ( I knew I saved tose things for a reason!) which looks decent enough when there is no Ipod installed.

When you release the side retainers, the ipod pops out enough to grasp it. Referring to the Airgizmo tech drawing at http://www.airgizmos.com/prod/pd3/specs.asp , I used four springs which sit in the mounting hole wells. They push the plastic platform to near the top level of the dock when no Ipod is installed.

I’ll post some pictures when I get a chance, along with some snapshots of my updated LED A/C control illumination, too.

I can’t get the spec sheet to load, and the link on Air Gizmo’s site takes me to a spec sheet for a different product. What is the necessary mounting hole size for the iPod dock?

    • Hi, John
You are right, the link to the pdf is wrong on AirGizmo’s website in the ipod dock product view. You can get the correct pdf from Airgizmo’s home page by clicking ‘extras’ and clicking on the only pdf in the Ipod category.
I will ask ‘em to correct the link.
